09/09/2007 - Rogers, AR (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Stacy Lewis' seven-under 65 held up as the best score at the LPGA NW Arkansas Championship in what officials believed was the first full-length tour event ever shortened to 18 holes.
Lewis, an amateur and the reigning NCAA champion, finished her round on Saturday before a weather suspension left 32 players still needing to complete theirs.
Persistent bad weather was a blight on this inaugural event since remnants of Hurricane Henriette blew through the Northwest Arkansas area on Friday morning to delay the start of the first round by 4 1/2 hours.
The tournament still wasn't caught up when more rain forced officials to suspend play again on Saturday morning and later declare that the event would be shortened from 54 holes to 18.
It was believed to be a first for the LPGA Tour.
"To the best of our knowledge, there have been 72- and 54-hole tournaments shortened to 36 in the past, but none to 18," said Dana Gross-Rhode, media relations coordinator for the LPGA Tour.
She also said there have been unofficial tour events where only an 18-hole score was recorded, as well as some official 18-hole events in 1952.
What the tour was left with was an orgy of notes following a bizarre weekend fraught with unfortunate weather conditions that left the course unplayable -- and even unwalkable.
Spectators were not allowed on the soggy Pinnacle Country Club grounds to watch the final 32 players complete their rounds on Sunday.
Stats and money payouts from the tournament were unofficial, not that it mattered in the case of Lewis. As an amateur, she was ineligible to receive a check.
There was no greenside presentation for the winner, although the tournament still planned on awarding Lewis the trophy, another LPGA official said.
Lewis became the first amateur to win an LPGA Tour event since JoAnne Carner at the 1969 Burdine's Invitational. The player with the best chance to pass her on Sunday was Jin Young Pak, who was five-under through 14 holes when play was suspended on Saturday.
But Pak managed only a five-under 67 to share fifth place.
Kristy McPherson, Katherine Hull and Teresa Lu tied for second place at six- under 66, one shot behind Lewis. All three finished their first round on Friday.
Some LPGA officials, as well as players, were already on their way to Sweden for next week's Solheim Cup when the round was finally completed Sunday morning.
As ended up, Lewis clinched the win early Saturday.
She birdied seven holes in a flawless round, making four birdies in a row during one stretch from the 11th hole (she started on the 10th). Of course, that birdie run took place over two days after Lewis' first round was interrupted by Friday's suspension.
Lewis made her seventh and final birdie at the par-four ninth on Saturday, her last hole in the first round, to take the lead by a shot. It began to rain as she rolled in the 15-foot putt.
In its own way, it was a baptism.
"It's awesome," Lewis, who won the NCAA championship as a junior, said on Saturday. "It's a cool feeling. Obviously, I've never been in this situation so I need to not really think about the lead and just go play golf."
Of course, she never got that chance.
Pak shared fifth place at 67 with Sherri Turner and Juli Inkster, while Maria Hjorth, Beth Bader and Linda Wessberg each had 68s.
